Jus’ Doin’ Mah Job.

I know it’s hard for you to believe, but I get paid to do what you just saw. When I was doodling a Blueberry X-Ray Machine, I was at work.

Like all of you are sick of hearing, one of the hats I wear is that of a costumer for a children’s theatre. Clearly, Jitterbug Theatre Productions is performing Willy Wonka, Jr.! this winter, and I’m really excited about what we have going on. Since we have actors that will be performing gymnastics, magic tricks, etc., we thought a 1970s circus vibe would be a great take on the chocolate factory and its strange employees. As my brilliant director said, “Willy Wonka is a ringleader.” Girl know what she talkin’ ‘bout.

So, not so much ART, but I made it with my hands…?

Broadway, Jr. Costume Designs

As I was looking for some glue in the art supplies section of my storage closet, I stumbled upon an old sketchbook from 2007 & 2008. Inside were a bunch of little doodles of plans for a coffee table I never made, some cartoon characters I was trying out, and some costume designs for Jitterbug Theatre Productions.

Here are a few of the sketches and the costumes that came from them:

Ti Moune

This picture cracks me up because the actor forgot to roll up the sleeves. He looks like an asylum escapee.

So, there they are. Much love to Grace for being a great seamstress and to Erin for takin’ a chance on a no-talent doodler.

Recently, I did some work for Jitterbug Theatre Productions for Mulan, Jr. There were 49 kids in the show, but I primarily worked on five costumes: Mulan, Mushu, and the Huns. The rest were ordered from various places including China itself. Pretty neat.Mulan: Cotton and satin shirt. Polyester trim. Khaki pedal-pushers. White tights.Mushu: Unitard with gold trim. Tail made from felt, trim, and pillow stuffing.Huns: Black cotton capes with faux fur detail.2009Nothing huge, but they turned out very cute.

My First Artist Interview
  • This interview was conducted between Keira, a high school art student in South Carolina, and li'l ol' me. She needed to interview the artist whom inspired her most recent piece...
  • Keira: So I just want a quick background. When did you first start getting serious about art? What is your favorite type? What college did you go to and what did you major in?
  • Alexi: I was serious about art as soon as I could draw. It's all I ever wanted to do. My mom said that when I was almost three, I took Crayola markers to our white couch. She claims that I bragged about how it was now decorated, and I told her "you're welcome."
  • Alexi: My favorite type of art is folk. This, of course, is pretty broad. I like the different textures and resourceful styles and materials. I enjoy the techniques and, sometimes, lack of education that goes into it. I pretty much just like folk because it lets you into someone's heart a little more than other styles.
  • Alexi: I went to the Savannah College of Art & Design in Savannah, Georgia. I majored in Photography and minored in Advertisement Design. A little short-lived, but very beneficial.
  • Keira: Aw little alexi sounds adorable haha.
  • Alexi: I was pretty bad-ass.
  • Keira: and i have a few questions about the zoe work specically. What was your inspiration for it? And how long did it take?
  • Alexi: Honestly, I did this piece because it was when Zoë was diagnosed with cancer. She was my family and my best friend (cheesy, but true), and I wanted to pay homage to her while she was still alive to see it. I know it sounds dumb, but it means more to me knowing that she was once in the same room as it. She died the next month.
  • Alexi: Altogether, step-by step, the whole piece probably took me about 4 hours. I usually have a habit of working on something from start to finish. Leaving it undone makes me a little nervous. I actually added the paint a month later, which wasn't planned, and it made it complete. I think that's why I like it more than a lot of my other pieces. I had time to think about it more.
  • Keira: Your inspiration is really touching, thanks for sharing that with me.
  • Alexi: You're welcome. :)
  • Keira: And don't you have a video of you doing it?
  • Alexi: I do. Part of it, at least. http://www.vimeo.com/3962861
  • Keira: okay cool. Well thats really all the questions I have for this project. Just a quick little interview haha. Thanks bunches for letting me do it!
