My First Artist Interview
- This interview was conducted between Keira, a high school art student in South Carolina, and li'l ol' me. She needed to interview the artist whom inspired her most recent piece...
- Keira: So I just want a quick background. When did you first start getting serious about art? What is your favorite type? What college did you go to and what did you major in?
- Alexi: I was serious about art as soon as I could draw. It's all I ever wanted to do. My mom said that when I was almost three, I took Crayola markers to our white couch. She claims that I bragged about how it was now decorated, and I told her "you're welcome."
- Alexi: My favorite type of art is folk. This, of course, is pretty broad. I like the different textures and resourceful styles and materials. I enjoy the techniques and, sometimes, lack of education that goes into it. I pretty much just like folk because it lets you into someone's heart a little more than other styles.
- Alexi: I went to the Savannah College of Art & Design in Savannah, Georgia. I majored in Photography and minored in Advertisement Design. A little short-lived, but very beneficial.
- Keira: Aw little alexi sounds adorable haha.
- Alexi: I was pretty bad-ass.
- Keira: and i have a few questions about the zoe work specically. What was your inspiration for it? And how long did it take?
- Alexi: Honestly, I did this piece because it was when Zoë was diagnosed with cancer. She was my family and my best friend (cheesy, but true), and I wanted to pay homage to her while she was still alive to see it. I know it sounds dumb, but it means more to me knowing that she was once in the same room as it. She died the next month.
- Alexi: Altogether, step-by step, the whole piece probably took me about 4 hours. I usually have a habit of working on something from start to finish. Leaving it undone makes me a little nervous. I actually added the paint a month later, which wasn't planned, and it made it complete. I think that's why I like it more than a lot of my other pieces. I had time to think about it more.
- Keira: Your inspiration is really touching, thanks for sharing that with me.
- Alexi: You're welcome. :)
- Keira: And don't you have a video of you doing it?
- Alexi: I do. Part of it, at least. http://www.vimeo.com/3962861
- Keira: okay cool. Well thats really all the questions I have for this project. Just a quick little interview haha. Thanks bunches for letting me do it!
